TAQUARIL C

REHABILITATION OF FAVELA TAQUARIL C [2009]
FINAL GRADUATION PROJECT
BELO HORIZONTE | BRAZIL

Located in the outskirts of Belo Horizonte bordering with Nova Lima, Taquaril C is a Favela which embraces a mountainous formation called Serra do Curral, which surrounds the southern part of the city.

After working as a volunteer in Taquaril C [more information can be found here] I felt the need to further my work with the local community and develop a big scale architectural project that could be donated and possibly built.

RESEARCH
A series of group discussions were then conducted with residents and the community leader Ms. Edneia Aparecida de Souza it was agreed that the project should be a Cultural, Educational and Sports Complex.

Research then included photographic and video mapping of the area; topographic surveys; residential and commercial uses searches as well as circulation, ventilation and insolation diagrams.

PROJECT
The proposal consists of a rehabilitation of a degraded area with high rates of violence and neglect which had been donated by the local City Hall for the Community Association in order to be developed.

The Cultural, Educational and Sports Complex included a Community Library with media centre, multifunctional classrooms, screening room; a Public Primary and Secondary School; a Public Park including sports courts, skate park, meeting and picnic areas, children’s playground and an open air arena suitable for festivals and public events.

MATERIALS
Even though the major part of the buildings were to be made using common materials found in the region and local construction techniques due to its low cost the project also contemplated the use of reused materials such as transport containers. The 20 and 40 feet containers were internally coated with plates made using reclaimed toothpaste tubes which has a high thermal and acoustic comfort efficiency and plywood floors with simple vinyl finishing.
